Sophie Buxton

My experience is varied and includes work with all ages, pre-schoolers through to adults in hospice care, in physical and intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, visual/hearing impairment, mental illness, traumatic brain injury, neurological rehabilitation and trauma. My interest in mental health and the community began 8 years ago when I established a community music therapy program for migrant adults called Good Vibrations. This experience developed my relationships in the community and broadened my understanding of mental health in the migrant, Maori and Pacific Island communities.

I am a New Zealand registered music therapist who is passionate about the benefits of music therapy. I have been working in Auckland over the past ten years with clients in mental health, hospice, disability, brain injury, trauma and with migrants.

I am currently continuing to develop my work focused on the psychodynamic relationship using different therapeutic approaches including Music Therapy, Guided Imagery and Music (music psychotherapy) and Psychotherapy. I enjoy working with a person-centred approach and appreciate the benefits of working with individuals and groups. As a fluent German speaker, I also have a passion for learning about other languages and cultures.
